How to Build a Deck Chair

When you go out and see a nice sunny sky, it’s nice to read a book and relax in the warm summer day. What we need is a deck chair! It’s a simple project and fun to do. You can enjoy leisurely days afterwards.

Required Materials/Tools

  • 2″ stock
  • Fabric
  • Galvanized screws
  • Tack nails
  • Planed furniture stock
  • Hammer
  • Coping saw
  • Router
  • Drill
  • Pencil
  • Palm sander

  1. Look around your hardware store for kits or designs. If you see a blue print you like, acquire the stock by ordering it to be cut to specific lengths or do it yourself.
  2. Shop for the fabric for your chair.
  3. Organize the stock in terms of length. We want easy organization so we can find what we’re looking for.
  4. After determining how tall you want the chair to be, cut and round out the side rail pieces.
  5. We need to drill a 1″ hole in the upper end of the side rail, 2″ from the end.
  6. Drill another hole about 5/8th of the way down. Repeat this two more times.
  7. Slide a 1″ dowel through each hole and connect all four pieces.
  8. We need to tack and glue the outside rails ONLY.
  9. Glue and tack the smaller rails with dowels.
  10. Use strapping sized wood and cut the lateral supports. These can be joints or just glued and nailed to the side of the rails. These need to be nailed at the lower section, halfway up.
  11. If you use a fabric, we don’t need to add support for the back of the chair. If not, use 1×3″ stock at the top and middle points, matching the dowel points on the rail.
  12. Do the same for the seat portion of the chair.
  13. All we need to do now, is to sand the chair down with a hand sander.
  14. After that, stain the chair, or paint it any color you wish!
  15. Make some ice tea, and relax to a good book!
